Photographs

When distance allows, Rick prefers to take the photos he works from. Otherwise, it is up to you to provide photos. Please do so within two weeks of making arrangements for your portrait. Photos of your home or business can be sent by "snail mail" or e-mail.

Tips for Taking Photos:

  • Photos are best when taken from an angle, as opposed to "straight on".
  • Keep it simple. Planters, flags, furniture, etc., may add to the charm of your home, but too many objects will make your finished portrait look cluttered. Let Rick know which objects you consider "musts" in your portrait.
  • Do your best to make sure colors are accurate (for color portraits.) This is best achieved by taking the photo in sunlight rather than shadows.
  • At least one photo should include all of the building(s) you want in the artwork. It is helpful to provide several photos which show detail, but indicate the one photo that has the view you would like Rick to use.
  • If it is impossible to get the whole building in one shot, take two overlapping photos (left and right) while standing in exactly the same place.
  • When too much foliage blocks the view of the building, consider using a photo taken in winter when branches are bare. Leaves can be added by Rick if desired.
  • Wires, cars, people, etc. will be omitted. Driveways may be reduced in size if featured prominently.
